NATIONAL THREE SOUTH
Worthing 23 Barking 19
BARKING slumped to their third loss of 2009 and slipped closer to the relegation zone after this defeat at Worthing.
Director of coaching Alex Codling made six changes to the side which lost at Bridgwater in their previous game, with Greg Evans, Samuel Wardinley, Sean Mullins, Adam Kwasnicki, Luke Hunter and Ben Thomas coming in for Alec Jenkins, Steve Pike, Seb Rate, Marcus Bloomberg, Edward Ambrose and Daniel Lloyd-Jones.
On a still afternoon in Angmering, his team started in strong fashion, building a 10-point lead in the first 10 minutes.
Fly-half Craig Ratford's penalty got the ball rolling, before full-back Scott Shaw broke free on the left to touch down under the posts.
Ratford added the extras, but if anything the try had the effect of galvanising the home side into action.
On 17 minutes, Joe Govett sniped over following a period of concerted pressure, Ben Coulson duly landing the conversion.
That trimmed the gap to three points but then indiscipline cost the Raiders, Ratford notching a penalty after referee Ed Turnhill deemed that a Worthing tackler had entered a ruck from the side.
However, the lead didn't last long and following a yellow card for Barking lock Ben Thomas, Govett darted over for his second try of the afternoon.
Coulson was successful with his conversion allowing the West Sussex side to take the lead for the first time in the match.
Barking battled back and Ratford's third penalty of the afternoon saw the visitors regain the lead at 16-14.
But there was still time left for a sting in the tail and Coulson's 39th minute penalty saw his team go in at the halfway point with a slender one point lead.
Both sides emerged unchanged for the second half and Barking went back in front on 48 minutes courtesy of Ratford's accurate kick at goal.
Indeed the Goresbrook outfit could have extended their lead had captain James Kellard's 53rd minute try not been disallowed for a foot in touch.
Instead, Coulson kicked Worthing back in front with his second penalty of the day.
Codling freshened up his back-line throwing on fit-again scrum-half Andrew Eaton for Jack Gash.
But when Anthony Andrews saw yellow on 62 minutes, the pendulum started to swing in Worthing's favour.
Coulson added three points from the resultant penalty and although Barking continued to press, Worthing closed out the game to secure their third consecutive win.
Barking are next in action on Saturday against Lydney at Goresbrook.
Barking: Shaw, Jones, Evans, Wardinley, Fraser, Ratford, Gash, Mullins, Kwasnicki, Hunter, Thomas, Kruis, Batho, Kellard Andrews.
Replacements: Ambrose, Newberry, Bloomberg, Rudgeley, Eaton.
