Gale Street outfit went down 27-17 on Saturday

Andrew Moreland was gutted after Barking suffered a 27-17 extra-time defeat at London Three Essex rivals East London in the Essex Intermediate Cup.

The Gale Street club took on East London in the cup under the Friday night lights, looking to make it through to the final four of the county competition.

In a tight match, the sides were level at 17-17 at the end of 80 minutes which ensured the need for extra time.

Though Barking continued to battle hard, they saw East London score a penalty and a try to seal the victory.

And director of rugby Moreland was devastated to see the Gale Street outfit beaten in such a manner.

“We were disappointed to lose the game, but in the end I think the difference between the two teams’ fitness told,” he said.

“There we plenty of positives for us to take from the game and that is something we’ll use going forward.”

Barking had already faced East London in the league this term, losing 29-12 at home on September 22.

By taking East London to extra time away from home, it was a sign of how far the Gale Street club have come in such a short space of time.

And Moreland is keen for Barking to maintain their level of improvement over the coming weeks.

“You could see from the game we had against East London in the league how much our fitness and overall game play had improved,” he added.

“We also have players stepping up now and becoming leaders, which is only going to be a positive going forward.

“We’re pleased with how we’ve improved since the start of the season, but know there is still plenty to work on.”

Conor Baker impressed for Barking against East London before coming off with a dislocated shoulder, but drew praise from Moreland for his efforts.

“Conor was very good for us again, but it’s a shame that we’ll be without him for the next few games,”said the director of rugby.

“He’s the latest to join the list of battered and bruised players, but we’re starting to get a few of them back.”
