ESSEX CUP QUARTER FINAL

Southend 0 Barking 38

Barking under-14s started the New Year in the same way they finished 2007.

The opening exchanges saw two big packs lock horns with no quarter asked or given.

The Barking pack of Watson, Lord, Kitenge, Ryan, Kingston, Hazell, Wayland and Ward, slowly gained the upper hand, allowing the backs to get into the match.

They eventually took the lead on 15 minutes when the ball was released to scrum half Dray before it was moved through Andrews and Nicholls for Jonathan Mutoka to score.

This seemed to settle the Barking team and Josh Townsend and Tommy Ward both showed great determination to break the home side defence and dive over for two more tries.

Townsend converted the last for the visitors to lead 17-0 at half time.

The second half saw impressive displays from Pitt, Burgess, Dempsey, Wilson, Cook and the superb Quirk at full back which allowed the backs to play some great passing rugby, resulting in impressive tries for Townsend, and Fraser McLeod, who twice sprinted through to score under the posts.

Townsend converted these three efforts, leaving the final score 38-0, which saw Barking through to the semi-finals.

Barking: Watson, Townsend, Nicholls, Cook, Andrews, Ward, Wayland, McLeod, Wilson, Kitenge, Mutoka, Lord, Daly, Dray, Kingston, Hazell, Dempsey, Pitt, Burgess, Quirk, Ryan.

Barking 12 Brentwood 12

DESPITE coming into the game as slight favourites, Barking under-13s were soon under pressure from a well-drilled Brentwood side.

The home team started slowly as Brentwood dominated the opening half to lead 12-0 at the break.

After the interval, Barking got their game together and Herring went over in the corner to make it 12-5.

They continued to pressurise and Herring once again touched down, before adding the conversion to ensure his team a share of the spoils.

Barking: Duke, Macklin, Yellop, Herring, Oliff, Ringwood, Dean, Clarke, Fitt, Myers, Davies, Crawford, Croft, Hawkes, Wenn, Blake, Waddams, Baker, Murphy.
