Barking Abbey pupil Shana Danenbergsons is set to battle it out for the honour of being crowned National Champion at the English Alpine Ski Championships in Italy this weekend.

The 14-year-old Danenbergsons is a member of the British Under-16 Ski team and seen as one of the country’s rising stars, training regularly at The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead.

The English Alpine Championships, organised by National Governing Body Snowsport England, take place in Bormio, Italy from tomorrow until Thursday and are a key event on the national skiing calendar.

The championships are well known as a platform for the rising stars of skiing, including the likes of Chemmy Alcott and Dave Ryding, who is currently competing on the World Cup circuit.

After a spectacular Opening Parade on Saturday afternoon, there will five days of racing across six categories: Senior, Junior, under-16, under-14, under-12 and under-10.

Over 350 athletes will then battle it out for the honours and Snowsport England chief executive Tim Fawke said: “We are excited about seeing England’s best Alpine skiers in action, particularly with some exceptional talents coming through at all ages.

“We are also looking forward to the unrivalled atmosphere of the Championships and giving young racers the chance to be part of such a fast past and exciting event.”

Danenbergsons finished third overall in the under-14 age group at Bormio last year and has been skiing with Evolution Racing.

A member of Hemel Ski Club, this is her third year on the full-time programme based in Radstadt, Austria.
