It’s been 50 years, but legendary comedian Jimmy Jones is returning to the Dagenham Roundhouse.
The 79-year-old, who went to St Peter’s School in Dagenham, is going back to his routes of where his career started with a headline performance at the iconic pub he played back in 1967.
Jimmy will be supported on the night by award-winning comedian Micky Pugh and music from artist Ray Collins next Saturday evening.
“The last time I worked at the Roundhouse it was 50 years ago and Mike Reed was top of the bill,” he explained.
“They promised me another booking, but I didn’t think it would be this long.”
Jimmy, who was the first stand up comedian to release a video of his live shows and in the early 1980s had three of those go into the UK top ten, has no intentions of quitting.
“There is no better feeling than making people laugh because laughter is the best heeler in the world,” he said.
“God gave me the ability to make people laugh and I enjoy doing that.”
The comedian has travelled the nation playing all the best venues, but he’s extremely excited to be playing back in Dagenham, as its close to his heart.
“It’s going to be a treat going back to Dagenham,” Jimmy added.
“I will go the old route past the Cherry Tree and places I used to work.
“My first time on stage was at the Dagenham Working Man’s Club, in Broad Street, with a guy called Max Bygraves.”
He even went on to tell the Post he doesn’t often plan to many jokes, as he likes to mention things and places, which his audience would know or recognise.
“I just see what happens on the night and a lot of it is about the audience,” he admitted.
“Micky and I work the audience and see what works.”
The gig starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 – visit roundhouse-dagenham.nutickets.com/ to book.
