Ballet Theatre UK will be performing Romeo and Juliet, at the Broadway theatre on Sunday.

The play, dubbed the world’s greatest love story, is being brought to the Barking stage as part of the nation’s celebrations of the playwright’s 400-year legacy.

Christopher Moore, artistic director of Ballet Theatre UK, said: “I’ve taken traditional ballets, which to some people have become museum pieces, bringing them up-to-date for the modern audience and engaging our audience with a passion and energy that I hope is inspiring.”

The theatre company gained permission from the Prokofiev family to use the composer’s music.

“The Prokofiev score is simply iconic. It gives the whole show a romantic but passionate feel which is so important for the storyline, along with setting the perfect atmosphere of ancient Verona.

“The score is adored by the dancers, which is fantastic as it is clear to see that they pour their heart and soul into the music and every performance.”

Christopher is also encouraging everyone to come along, even if they are not ballet or Shakespeare fans.

“I had a retired gentleman approach me after one of our shows who said that he had never been to a ballet before and was so pleased he had now done so, having enjoyed it immensely.

“I think it should be considered as one of life’s experiences. You’ll never know till you try it.

“A live show with a high visual content and rousing music will always set the heart beating faster and Romeo and Juliet is a perfect introduction as it is such a well-known story.

“Yet the complex choreography challenges for the seasoned classical ballet fan.”

Romeo and Juliet will start at 3pm and go until 6pm.
