Residents that keep up to date with my work in the constituency may have seen that since September I have been campaigning to ‘Protect Rainham’s Air’ – fighting against plans to build a second huge waste incinerator on the banks of the Thames opposite Dagenham Ford.

As the campaign has progressed it has become clearer and clearer that this isn't just a fight for Rainham but for the south of Dagenham as well. I visited the existing Cory facility recently in Belvedere and I saw that Dagenham Dock is just a stones throw away.

My concern is that the prevailing wind direction will mean poor air quality for existing communities and new residents alike. I am particularly worried following a World Health Organisation report in February that found 90 per cent of the world's children are breathing toxic air.

I don't want the children of Dagenham and Rainham breathing poor air tomorrow because we failed to act today.

Every report has said that this will have a detrimental impact on air quality, human health and biodiversity across Dagenham and Rainham. This includes the Beam Park area which is set to see 3,000 new homes, two new schools and open spaces in the coming years.

I am urging residents of Dagenham to support my campaign against this proposal. The final decision rests with the secretary of state for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and I will be submitting a petition to whoever that may be towards the end of this year.
