I’ve been campaigning for more investment in local policing for the last 10 months, so I welcome the prime ministers commitment to recruit 20,000 new police officers – replacing the 21,000 that have been lost due to government cuts over the last nine years.
Residents that keep up to date with my work in the constituency may have seen that since September I have been campaigning to ‘Protect Rainham’s Air’ – fighting against plans to build a second huge waste incinerator on the banks of the Thames opposite Dagenham Ford.
The UK’s leading child poverty coalition is calling for government to outline an ambitious child poverty-reduction strategy as new data shows child poverty is becoming the norm in some parts of Britain.
Since 2010, child poverty has increased nationally by half a million, working-age poverty by 200,000 and pensioner poverty by 400,000.
This is going to be a big year for Dagenham with lots of new projects and much needed investment starting to take shape.
In 2018 I launched a campaign Calling Time on Crime, demanding that the government put more resources into front-line policing and reverse the cuts in funding.
March 29 is fast approaching and whilst it may be a new year we still have the same old Tories in charge.
